Matilde is depressed. She doesn’t want to clean, she wants to tell jokes. In Portuguese. Problem is, she’s Lane’s live-in maid. And all Lane wants is a clean house. She’s got everything else - a husband who’s a successful surgeon and her own busy career as a doctor - or so she thinks.

Virginia, Lane’s oddball sister, loves to clean. She strikes a deal with Matilde, and order in the household is temporarily restored. That is, until secrets are uncovered that make a mess of Lane’s life.

Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2005, The Clean House is a moving and witty story that illustrates how from messiness can spring unexpected feelings, friendships and a strange sort of magic that transforms a sterile environment into warm surroundings.

Audience Advice:
The Clean House contains the use of some strong adult language
