A Doll's House

A Doll's House

By Henrik Ibsen
Adapted by Frank McGuiness

Directed by David Latham

APRIL 21 - MAY 8, 2010

Running Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
(with 2 intermissions)

One would be hard-pressed to find a wife more devoted than Nora Helmer. In Nora’s eyes, husband Torvald is a good and decent man. He is a provider and a nurturer. Torvald takes care of his delicate Nora, almost as one might take care of a little bird. And while his overly affectionate names for her begin to feel thickly sweet, audiences eventually realize not all things are as they appear. After confiding a dark secret to her friend Christine, Nora struggles to keep a dangerous truth from her husband. But what if Torvald was to learn the truth about Nora? Would it bring them even closer together, or tear them apart forever?

Ruth Says...

David Latham will be directing this extraordinary play that radically changed the course of contemporary theatre and society’s views about women when it premiered in Copenhagen in 1879. A Doll’s House broke all the conventions of a ‘well-made play’ and its naturalism was an astonishing departure from the romanticism of most theatre of the times.
